The Assamese Department has been one of the very vibrant and dedicated departments of the college. The department is privileged of shaping the career as well as literary taste and pursuit of the young students. Right from the inception of the college in 1983, the department has been producing brilliant and sensible students who have contributed significantly to the society.

The departmental library, 'Bezbaruah Library', provides substantial reading material and the departmental literary forum a congenial platform for literary interaction between students and teachers. The departmental print magazine 'Gunjan' and wall magazine 'Gyan Malini', provides ample opportunity to young minds for expression of their literary creativity. The department has been organising an annual lecture programme on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti since 2018. The department has stated awarding the best graduate of the dept. with 'Jyoti Award' from 2019. The department has also stated a departmental fund from 2018 to help needy students. The departmental chorus has been composed and accepted in 2019.

The department held its first allumni meet in 2019 and an allumni association has been created to keep all departmental ex-students in touch with each other.
